JAKARTA, iNews.id – Vaccines are one of the effective prevention against infection because of their specific protective properties. One of the proofs of the success of the vaccine is the elimination of smallpox (variola) disease since the 1900s.
Previously, one in three sufferers of smallpox died. The world is also able to eliminate measles and polio, including in Indonesia through vaccines so that they are now polio-free. This is clear evidence of the success of immunization with high coverage.
The process of making a vaccine is a complex biotechnological process. Initially, researchers or vaccine makers determine vaccine seeds. Second, when you have got the right vaccine candidate, then tested on animals to determine its safety and effectiveness. When it is proven safe and effective in animals, then it is tested on humans known as Phase I, II, and III clinical trials.
“The goal of this clinical trial process is to ensure the safety of the vaccine being tested, because when we talk about vaccines there is no bargaining about safety, that’s absolute. Second, we just talked about effectiveness, “said dr. Dirga Sakti Rambe at the Productive Dialogue event with the theme “Vaccines: Effective and Safe Public Health Interventions” organized by the Management Committee Covid-19 and National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN), Tuesday (3/11/2020).
Currently, the government plans to deliver and produce a Covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia to stop the spread, reduce morbidity and mortality due to Covid-19. Being a Covid-19 sufferer is not a pleasant experience, as told by Stevanus Grandy Budiawan, a Covid-19 survivor with his entire family. Even though he has mild symptoms and can recover by doing self-isolation at home, Stevanus Grandy Budiawan never forgets to consult a doctor if there is a change in symptoms in himself and his family members.
Stevanus, who has now recovered from Covid-19, said that the precautionary principle must not be relaxed.
“We continue to carry out the protocol as before we experienced Covid-19. I use one principle that is used in the family. Assume that the other person dealing with us is someone without symptoms (OTG). We don’t know the person is sick or not. If they don’t wear masks we say, ‘Please wear the masks when talking to me,’ “he said.
