JAKARTA – Internal medicine specialist and vaccinologist, dr. Dirga Sakti Rambe stated that vaccines are effective in suppressing infectious disease infections. Vaccines are also an effective prevention against infection because of their specific protective properties.
Dirga revealed that one of the proofs of the success of the vaccine is the elimination of smallpox (variola) disease since the 1900s.
In the past, one in three sufferers of smallpox died. The world is also able to eliminate measles and polio, including in Indonesia through vaccines so that it is now polio-free.
“This is clear evidence of the success of high coverage immunization,” said Dirga at the Productive Dialogue on Vaccines: Effective and Safe Public Health Interventions, which was organized by the Committee for Handling COVID-19 and National Economic Recovery (KPC PEN), Tuesday (03/11 / 2020).
Dirga also explained that the vaccine manufacturing process is a complicated biotechnological process. Initially, researchers or vaccine makers determine vaccine seeds.
Second, when you have got the right vaccine candidate, then tested on animals to determine its safety and effectiveness. When it is proven safe and effective in animals, then it is tested on humans, known as Phase I, II, and III clinical trials.
“The goal of this clinical trial process is to ensure the safety of the vaccines being tested, because when we talk about vaccines there is no bargaining about safety, that’s absolute. Second, we just talk about effectiveness, “explained Dirga.
