Vaccines and the future of the pandemic: fourth dose only for the vulnerable and waiting for winter | Society

At the beginning of January, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) exposed some warnings about the future of the vaccination plan against covid-19. “Repeated doses in a short interval of time would not represent a sustainable long-term strategy,” said Marco Cavaleri, head of the agency’s Vaccine Strategy. A vision shared by the Spanish Association of Vaccinology in Spain: “We all agree that it makes no sense to give a booster dose to the entire population every two months. It would not be sustainable, neither on the part of the population, since the fatigue would be very great, nor on the part of the system, ”warns Dr. Jaime Pérez, a member of its board of directors and a specialist in preventive medicine.

Spain, for the moment, has only opened the fourth dose to people with very high risk and immunocompromised. “We believe that being a well-defined group, a little personalized medicine should be done. First make a measurement of what immune response the vaccine has had, both antibodies and cells, and while we do these studies we will be able to have access to new vaccines, ”says the immunologist Carmen Cámara, from the Spanish Society of Immunology. That vaccination, adds Cámara, should be “heterologous”, that is, it should not be a new dose of RNA vaccine: “Studies show that there is a clear superior stimulus when combining vaccines.”
