Vaccines against COVID-19 of mRNA do not cause absence of menstruation: EMA

Available data suggests that mRNA COVID-19 vaccines do not cause missed periods, the European Union’s health regulator concluded on Friday.

The evaluation was prompted by reports of menstrual disturbances after receiving one or two injections of the Moderna MRNA.O or Pfizer-BioNTech PFE.N22UAy.DE vaccines.

Menstrual disturbances can be due to a number of reasons, including underlying medical conditions as well as stress and tiredness. Health authorities have highlighted that cases have also been reported after infection by COVID-19.

The absence of menstruation is defined as the absence of bleeding for a period of 90 days or more.

Meanwhile, the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) continues to investigate cases of heavy menstrual bleeding with the two vaccines.

Reports of heavy menstruation—bleeding characterized by increased volume and/or duration that interferes with quality of life—were highlighted as a potential concern after a Norwegian study suggested an increase in menstruation after inoculation .

On Friday, the committee said it had reviewed all available data on possible risk, but had asked vaccine makers for an updated cumulative review of cases.
