Vaccination will also be for children, but we will let them into school without him, Merkel said

“The safe operation of schools in the future will continue to depend on how many schoolchildren are vaccinated. I repeat, it will not depend on the vaccinations of children, “Angela Merkel told reporters after the meeting. Vaccination of children will not be mandatory in Germany as in the case of adults.

The EMA could approve the vaccination of Pfizer / BioNTech children from the age of 12 this Friday. It can now be used in people from the age of 16 in the European Union. “I have news that Moderna is also on a similar path in the future,” the chancellor added, adding that in the case of Moderna it will take some time to issue the consent.

Merkel also reiterated that by the end of the summer, every inhabitant of 83 million Germany will have the opportunity to get vaccinated if the vaccine is approved for his age group. Although Germany will cancel the priority immunization from June 7, not everyone will be given a deadline immediately.

The German government wants to set aside 6.4 million doses to vaccinate children against covid-19. According to the portal of the magazine Der Spiegel, this follows from a document in which the Ministry of Health prepared the vaccination of children and young people aged 12 to 18 years.

However, the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko), an advisory body to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German Office for Disease Prevention and Control, is not planning a general recommendation on child vaccination, according to one member. Instead, the commission will probably only recommend vaccinating those children who suffer from selected chronic diseases.

On the contrary, the German Ethics Council, which serves as an independent advisory body to the government and parliament, is open to vaccinating children. The head of the council, Alena Buyxová, said that the main argument is that even children aged 12 to 15 want to be protected. Although Stiko does not issue a general recommendation to vaccinate children from the age of 12, German Health Minister Jens Spahn is counting on their immunization, and 60% of 5.3 million children and young people in Germany are expected to be vaccinated.

In Germany, according to current data, 34.5 million people have received at least one dose, of which 13 million have completed the vaccination cycle.
