Vaccination should be possible for children aged 5 to 11 years

Parents should be given the choice whether to have children between the ages of 5 and 11 vaccinated against the coronavirus, provided the Health Council advises positively on this. That is the view of a large majority of the House of Representatives.

It European Medicines Agency (EMA) concluded last month that BioNTech/Pfizer’s vaccine is safe and effective for children ages 5 to 11, albeit at a lower dose than adults. Children in this age group with an increased medical risk will soon be able to receive an injection, the outgoing minister Hugo de Jonge decided this week. But for the broader group it is not yet that far.

Choice with parents

The Health Council, whose advice is often followed by the cabinet, is expected to issue a new advice this week on vaccinating the broader group of children. If the council follows the EMA, the choice must be made with parents, according to parliament. Most parties voted in favor of the motion of D66 and the PvdA.

Children aged 12 years and older have been able to receive a corona vaccination for longer.
