Vaccination posts against covid-19 announced in Managua for pregnant women, postpartum women and breastfeeding mothers

The department of Managua would have enabled three anticovid vaccination posts as of this Wednesday, October 13, according to a recent publication of the Local System of Comprehensive Health Care (Silais) Managua on its social networks. Although the arrival in Nicaragua of the first batch of Pfizer vaccines donated to the country destined for this segment has not yet been made official, the Silais Managua shared its calendar this week.

The publication only specifies the three points for this week in Managua, leaving out Carazo, where vaccination would also have been announced for this segment of women. In this way, they officially start immunization for a vulnerable group of the population that after seven months of waiting could finally have access to the drug that protects them from serious effects, risks of hospitalization or death from covid-19.

“Here is a weekly schedule of voluntary vaccination against covid-19 from October 13 to 16 for pregnant women from 4 months, postpartum women and women breastfeeding up to 6 months of the baby,” reads the publication. Women who meet these requirements must go to the corresponding health post with their identity card and prenatal control card.

Pfizer’s vaccine has been authorized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for this segment of the population and is the one that, after international clinical trials, has proven to be effective and safe for pregnant women who have just passed childbirth. or cesarean section or breastfeeding. For this reason, in early September the Pan American Health Organization called on the governments of the region to prioritize pregnant women in vaccinating against covid-19 because they are one of the most vulnerable groups to the virus.

No special protocol

The Ministry of Health aims to vaccinate with this biological agent some 80,000 pregnant women who have completed at least the fourth month of the gestation period, informed the Minister of Health, Martha Reyes.

It has not been explained if there will be a special protocol to develop immunization for these women, but the Ministry of Health faces a logistical challenge that guarantees that they will be safe or that the risk of contagion will be minimized, in addition to many about their condition of pregnancy, which already involves physical challenges, also suffer from chronic diseases, have some temporary ailments or diseases.
