During the corona vaccination of children, the vaccine doses were mixed up in the vaccination center at Hanover Zoo on Monday. The Hanover region wants to clear up what is happening as soon as possible.
42 boys and girls, for whom the vaccine was intended for five to eleven year olds, received the vaccine with the higher concentration for adults, as the Hanover region announced. According to Marlene Graf, the senior specialist at the health department, the confusion is not expected to have any serious consequences: “From a medical point of view, it is an unnecessary increased dose of the vaccine that should not have any negative effects.” According to the findings of the health department, side effects such as pain at the injection site or fever occur at most.
Regional President Krach wants to review processes
“Even if no serious health consequences are to be expected, something like this should not have happened,” said regional president Steffen Krach (SPD). The Hanover region will immediately analyze how this error could have come about. “This must never happen again,” said Krach. He announced that all processes will be checked again.
Counseling services for affected parents
Krach apologized to the affected families. All parents of the children concerned had been informed directly by the regional administration by phone and email, it said on Monday. Medical advice is available to them from the pediatric emergency services of the Hannover Medical School, the Auf der Bult Children’s Hospital and the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.
