After the medical staff and the city employees, from the beginning of September all employees of the transport company in New York must either present a vaccination certificate or have themselves regularly tested.
This applies to the approximately 68,000 employees of the local transport authority MTA, which is responsible, among other things, for subways and buses, as well as for the employees of the Port Authority, which operates the airports, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday.
Similar regulations for the urban staff of the metropolis, including police officers and teaching staff, as well as medical staff, had previously been announced. Mayor Bill de Blasio also announced on Monday that in future only people who have already been vaccinated would be recruited by the city. In addition, he recommended all people, including those who had already been vaccinated, to put on masks again in public interiors – but did not officially order this.
The measures, which were also introduced elsewhere in the USA, are a reaction to the rapidly spreading delta variant of the coronavirus, which is now dominant in the USA and is causing increasing numbers of infections, especially among unvaccinated people.
