Slovakia has started vaccinating people against Covid-19 with the Russian-developed Sputnik V vaccine, which has not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency.
As a result, Slovakia has become the second country in the European Union after Hungary to take such a step.
Slovakia currently has 200,000 doses of Sputnik V in stock and is available to people aged 18 to 60.
Local media report that interest in the possibility of vaccinating with a vaccine developed in Russia is much lower than initially expected.
The purchase of Sputnik V vaccines in Slovakia has been controversial. In March, then-Prime Minister Igor Matovich secretly agreed with Russia to supply vaccines without consulting coalition partners who opposed the move. This led to a political crisis, and Matovich was forced to resign.
CONTEXT:
Currently, only Hungary uses “Sputnik V” to vaccinate the population in the EU. The European Medicines Agency launched in March speed up the evaluation of Sputnik V.
