Thousands of Valencian men and women between 27 and 30 years old received the summons for the immunization of the covid yesterday in a generalized way. It is a group that has already begun to be vaccinated throughout this week in inland areas where the smallest number of people in general, and that of people under 30 years of age in particular, allowed to accelerate the inoculation in this group .
The citation, in this case, is practically generalized in all the departments and comes at a time when those born between 1992 and 2001 accumulate more than 1,500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, an incidence that is at third wave levels, and practically three times the average for the entire Valencian Community.
Being the second group (only ahead of adolescents) with the lowest percentage of immunized persons is one of the explanations for the differences between this age group and other more advanced ones such as those in their fifties and sixties (the majority group among their parents ) in which the contagion rate is around 200 and 250 points, five times less.
Obviously, this issue is also influenced by the greater number of social contacts. In fact, the report of the Subdirectorate of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health assures that, while young people have around an average of between six and ten close contacts, in older ones it drops to four.
Be that as it may, the massive summons to Valencian twentysomethings will allow the protection indexes of this cohort to rise. At the moment there are almost 70,000 who have at least one dose, 14% of the more than 500,000 that make up this group, although still far from the 32% that marks the state average. From the Generalitat they hope to shorten this distance soon with the arrival of more Moderna vaccines for the month of August.
The citation is massive but not total between the ages of 27 and 30, since there are those who will not be able to be vaccinated next week. One of the reasons is to have tested positive for covid in the last six months, a situation in which there are about 15,000 young people (if they have not been vaccinated before), most of them – more than 13,000 – with infection from the last 30 days. The other is to have disabled a week for vacations (more than 200,000 young people have done it) and that influences the distribution of the second puncture for which four weeks must pass in the case of Moderna and three in the case of Pfizer.
The landing of the vaccine in the arms of thousands of Valencian twenty-somethings will not serve, however, to stop the contagion curve at this time, as the experts point out, but it will take time. “Until the end of August”, if it is this way, explains the specialist of the Fisabio Foundation, Salvador Peiró, who remembers that between the puncture and the total immunization “you need six weeks.”
To this, he adds, the Delta variant is added, already fully extended in the Valencian Community, compared to which a dose has very little effectiveness in preventing infection. For this reason, he affirms, “this wave will be cut from the measures put in place up to now that seek to reduce social contacts in risky situations, the vaccine will prevent and avoid others later”, sentence.
