Vaccination doubters not convinced in time

The Dutch government has not focused on reaching and convincing possible vaccination doubters and refusals in time. As a result, there is currently a group of people who, for various reasons, do not want to be vaccinated. This is apparent from research by the LUMC, Erasmus University and The Hague University of Applied Sciences after a survey among vaccine refusers.

According to Katja Rusinovic, lecturer in Metropolitan Development at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, this is because the vaccination campaign first focused on the group that did want to be vaccinated. ‘We thought too late about the group of vaccination doubters. How could we achieve these? While it would have yielded a lot of profit if we had already focused on this target group from the start.’

key figures

According to her, insufficient attention has been paid to the reasons why people do not get vaccinated. ‘How do you convince people who do not want to be vaccinated, who, for example, are afraid of the side effects or who have religious considerations not to be vaccinated. In fact, you only see in recent months that key figures are used, such as the general practitioner.’

Rusinovic’s research also shows that during the corona crisis, the GP was a constant source of trust. Confidence in the GGD and RIVM is declining, while confidence in the general practitioner has only increased. According to Rusinovic, more could have been used on this trust.
