Vaccination coverage against covid remains below 10% in 20 countries, according to WHO experts

Ginebra (AFP) – Vaccination coverage against covid-19 remains below 10% in 20 countries, most of them in Africa, the WHO expert committee for vaccination policy (SAGE) lamented on Monday.

The deployment of vaccines against covid-19 reached an “unprecedented” pace in the world and almost all countries in the world managed to have a vaccination campaign in less than 12 months, experts revealed in a statement.

However, 20 countries, compared to 34 in mid-January, still do not exceed a level of 10% vaccination, Kate O’Brien, WHO’s immunization officer, warned at a news conference.

“These are countries that are working very hard to move their vaccination programs forward,” O’Brien said.

The Covax international mechanism for organizing access to vaccines, which is managed by the WHO and other partners, has enough doses to vaccinate 70% of the population in 92 low- and middle-income countries that are recipients of donations before June .

The WHO set a goal of reaching a vaccination rate of 70% of the population in each country by mid-2022.

The Covax mechanism seeks to guarantee equal access to vaccines and so far has already delivered 1.4 billion doses in 145 countries.

This scale is below the objectives that sought to deliver 2,000 million doses by the end of 2021.
