Dresden. On Sunday there was an unusually high level of activity on the Robotron site on Heilbronner Strasse in the Coschütz-Gittersee industrial park. The IT company is the first in a Dresden vaccination campaign.
To protect against corona, the city is now relying not only on the vaccination center in the Dresden Exhibition Center, the clinics and general practitioners, but also on company doctors and the use of mobile vaccination teams in Dresden companies. Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert is pushing the pace and still sees a few hurdles.

What are the new company vaccinations?
As of this Monday, the prioritization is canceled. This means that everyone can arrange vaccination appointments for themselves. So far, only certain professional groups in the critical infrastructure, such as nursing staff and especially the elderly, had a prioritization. Now everyone can be vaccinated.
This means that company doctors are also allowed to administer vaccine doses, even in companies that are not part of the critical infrastructure. “For us this is a clear relief of the process,” says Nicole Porzig from the board of the DRK Saxony, which is responsible for the vaccinations. So far, 2.5 million vaccinations have been carried out in the Free State, more than 40 percent of which are already the second vaccinations.
How does the city support this?
“Robotron is our pilot,” said Mayor Hilbert. The company has around 500 employees in Dresden, and 230 of his colleagues registered for the vaccination campaign for Sunday, according to Robotron managing director Ulf Heinemann.
The IT company is involved in many relevant areas, which is why a failure due to mass infections is “impossible” according to Heinemann. The police and a large network operator, for example, use the technology from Robotron.
Dresden supports the campaign as an interface between the DRK and the companies, according to Mayor Hilbert. “We started that with the vaccination taxis.” Of course, the vaccination center in the fair is the most important location. “But mobile teams are also used at critical points, as is now the case with Robotron.” According to the mayor, this can be companies, entire industrial parks, but also work in city districts. There will still be specific agreements on when and where vaccination will take place.
What is it supposed to achieve?
Robert Franke, head of Dresden’s economic development agency, assesses the vaccination campaign in a similar way to the distribution of masks on the Lingnermarkt in order to open it. “Important pillars of the economy must be protected in order to function.” Last year, the city also supported small businesses with immediate aid and is currently using an app for contact tracking so that shops and restaurants can reopen.
“We want to have a high vaccination quota in Dresden as quickly as possible and across the board,” said Hilbert. The campaign should help with this.
What are the problems?
“Despite the lifting of the prioritization, not everyone will get a vaccination appointment right away,” said Porzig. “We have to ask for patience because the vaccine is still missing.” But that should change soon. The vaccination centers in Leipzig, Chemnitz and Dresden and the 30 mobile vaccination teams for Saxony will remain open until the end of August. The others close at the end of July, because then more general practitioners are supposed to vaccinate. Hilbert says he is relying on Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who says that by September everyone who wants should have a vaccination offer.
The second problem is that the city doesn’t even know how many Dresden residents have been vaccinated. Although 125,000 first and 75,000 second vaccinations were administered in the Dresden vaccination center, every Saxon can make an appointment in Dresden and every Dresdener also in a different Saxon center. It is not transmitted how many Dresdeners have been vaccinated. The numbers from family doctors, from the clinics and now also from company doctors do not provide any information about how many Dresden residents are vaccinated. “Our employees come from all over the world,” says Robotron boss Heinemann. “We would like these numbers”, says Hilbert. “We can only support the DRK in such a way that the employees only have to take care of the vaccination.”
