Vaccination Campaign and Search in Viacha to Combat Suspected Human Rabies Outbreak

The director of the Departmental Health Service (Headquarters) of La Paz, Prisley Riveros, reported that, as a result of the suspected case of human rabies detected this month, a vaccination campaign and a search are currently being carried out in the town of Viacha, where the the patient who allegedly suffers from the disease.

Riveros explained that the work is carried out in Viacha, one kilometer around the focus where canine rabies was confirmed and human rabies is still being analyzed. For this reason, the relatives of the minor and the people who live in the surroundings are vaccinated.

In addition, the Sedes de La Paz controls the canine population. Riveros pointed out that some 100 dogs were detected that were free on the streets of Viacha, for which reason the municipal authorities were asked to apply a plan to control them and apply the anti-rabies vaccine.

Once the raking of a kilometer around is completed, the work will be extended to the rest of the municipality, to avoid outbreaks of canine rabies.

Last night, the Minister of Health, María Renée Castro, reported that a suspected case of human rabies was detected, whose patient is a 2-year-old and 10-month-old girl, who was bitten on the upper lip and nose by a dog. of the seven that his family had, on July 2.

The patient presented fever and shortness of breath on July 14, for which her family took her to a health center. Given the state of health of the minor, she was taken to the intensive care unit of the Children’s Hospital in La Paz, where she has a reserved diagnosis. The victim received only nine of the 10 anti-rabies doses, because her father took him away from her mother due to family problems.

Rivero indicated this Wednesday that the minor presented, among other symptoms, nausea, vomiting and expulsion of foam from the mouth.

However, the Director of the La Paz Headquarters announced that the results of the laboratory confirming or ruling out human rabies in the girl will be available until tomorrow.
