Since Monday it is possible to become in the Netherlands vaccinated against the monkeypox virus. For the time being, this is only possible in Amsterdam and The Hague. About 32,000 people have received an invitation for a vaccination.

The first invitations were sent to people from the high-risk groups. These include people who are registered as users of the HIV prevention pill PrEP, or people who are infected with the HIV virus.

This weekend monkey pox was identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) proclaimed to an international threat to public health, the most serious warning the agency can issue. So far, 712 cases of infections have been known in the Netherlands, two thirds of which in Amsterdam.
