Redaction.- The Junta de Castilla y León begins next Tuesday the 10th the vaccination campaign against flu and Covid-19 with the general population in the groups in which the vaccine is recommended. With institutionalized people, mainly in nursing homes, the campaign began on October 3rd.

The vaccination appointment can be requested through the usual channels: Sacyl Conecta App, telephone number of your health center, or in person, and on the Castilla y León Health Portal.

It is important to remember that for vaccination, which will be carried out mostly in health centers, you must go with an ID and health card; that you must wear comfortable clothing that allows for quick vaccination in the arm; that if you have a fever or any symptoms of discomfort, you should not go and get vaccinated against flu or Covid-19; and that you should not go get vaccinated against Covid-19 if less than three months have passed since the last dose received or if less than three months have passed since the last time you had the disease.

Regarding influenza, the campaign is aimed primarily at those population groups with a higher risk of complications if they suffer from influenza infection and at people who can transmit it to others with a high risk of complications.

The objective of vaccination against Covid-19 is to reinforce the protection of the most vulnerable people and health and social health personnel to reduce morbidity and mortality and the impact of this disease on care capacity.

Vaccination against flu and Covid-19 is recommended for the following groups:

People 60 years of age or older. People 5 years of age or older in disability centers and nursing homes, as well as other people institutionalized for a long time and residents in closed institutions. People under 60 years of age with the following risk conditions: diabetes mellitus and Cushing’s syndrome, morbid obesity, chronic cardiovascular, neurological or respiratory diseases – including bronchopulmonary dysplasia -, cystic fibrosis and asthma, chronic kidney disease and nephrotic syndrome, hemoglobinopathies and anemias or hemophilia, other coagulation disorders and chronic bleeding disorders, as well as such as recipients of blood products and multiple transfusions, asplenia or severe splenic dysfunction, chronic liver disease – including chronic alcoholism -, severe neuromuscular diseases, immunosuppression – including primary immunodeficiencies and that caused by HIV infection or drugs, as well as in transplant recipients and complement deficiency–cancer and malignant hemopathies, cerebrospinal fluid fistula and cochlear implant or awaiting the same, celiac disease, chronic inflammatory disease, disorders and diseases that entail cognitive dysfunction–Down syndrome, dementia and others– .Pregnant women in any trimester of gestation and women during the postpartum period – up to 6 months after giving birth and who have not been vaccinated during pregnancy –. In addition to the above, flu vaccination is recommended for:

Child population between 6 and 59 months of age. This is a novelty in the immunization calendar of Castilla y León. Children between 6 and 23 months will receive the vaccine intramuscularly and children between 24 and 59 months will receive the vaccine intranasally. The recruitment of these children will be carried out directly from the Primary Care Pediatric consultations. Staff from educational centers at any level of education. People from 5 to 59 years old who have a higher risk of complications derived from the flu. This group includes smokers. Students interning in health and socio-health centers. People who work on farms, poultry, pig or mink farms or who are in contact with wildlife.

Vaccines for Covid-19

The vaccine to be administered against Covid-19 in the 2023-2024 season is a monovalent vaccine against the XBB.1.5 subvariant of the omicron strain, preferably XBB.1.5, which ensures protection against circulating strains of SARS-CoV -2.

Until the last week of October, Castilla y León will receive just over 400,000 doses of vaccines against Covid-19 from the Ministry of Health. These vaccines are received weekly. So far, nearly 26,000 doses have arrived at the Territorial Health Services.

Immunization against bronchiolitis

Another novelty in the Immunization Calendar of Castilla y León is the incorporation of a new drug (Nirsevimab) that provides immunity against the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), whose infection produces what is commonly known as bronchiolitis.

With this addition to the immunization schedule, in Castilla y León a single dose of Niservimab will be administered during the 2023-2024 campaign for all children born between March 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024. Children born up to September 30 they will be called from the health centers; those born on or after October 1 will be vaccinated at the hospital.
