Vaccination Campaign 2023-2024: Target Groups, Vaccines, and Guidelines in Andalusia

Like the previous campaign, vaccination focuses on a part of the population, the so-called target groups, chosen due to a special vulnerability to contagion or to suffering from serious forms of these respiratory infections. A staggered schedule will be followed in opening the agendas, that is, it will begin with the most vulnerable people and will progress progressively with the following groups.

Generally, these people will be given one dose of the flu vaccine and one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to prevent them during the fall and winter. For some people, only the flu vaccine will be given, not the COVID vaccine. It will be used to review and update pneumococcus vaccination if necessary.

In summary, the main ones most relevant for this 2023-24 vaccination campaign in Andalusia are the following:

The quadrivalent influenza vaccines to be used will be: egg culture vaccine (Vaxgrip Tetra®), cell culture vaccine (Flucelvax Tetra®) and the high antigenic load vaccine (Efluelda®).
Regarding the COVID-19 messenger RNA vaccines to be used, it will be the Comirnaty Ómicron XBB.1.5® vaccine. Three preparations will be available: 30 micrograms (for people 12 years and older); 10 micrograms (5 to 11 years); 3 micrograms (6 to 59 months). The Bimervax® (Hipra) vaccine will be for people 16 years of age or older with a contraindication to mRNA vaccines.
The age cut-off in adults for systematic influenza vaccination is lowered: the general population aged 60 or over will now be vaccinated, the same as for COVID-19.
The indications for high antigenic load influenza vaccine (Efluelda®) will be: systematic in the general population aged 85 years or older. It will also be administered to residents aged 60 and over in nursing homes, like last year.
Regarding the dosage of influenza vaccination in the child population from 6 to 59 months: one dose in the general child population from 6 to 59 months, regardless of whether they have been previously vaccinated.
There are new indications for flu vaccination: People with direct occupational exposure to animals or their secretions on poultry, swine or mink farms or farms or to wild fauna (birds, wild boars or mustelids), such as ranchers, veterinarians, farm workers, hunters, ornithologists. , environmental agents, zoo staff, etc. Smokers.
Regarding the minimum interval for vaccination against COVID-19 with respect to the last dose of vaccine against COVID-19 or COVID-19 infection. At least 3 months in all cases.
Regarding COVID-19 vaccination in childhood, the indication for vaccination in the population 6 months or older will be only for those with risk pathologies when the doses are available (as of October 25, 2023), starting with those with higher risk pathologies. In the population between 6 and 59 months without a history of vaccination or previous infection, a 3-dose schedule will be administered (0, 3 and 8 weeks).
During the campaign, populations not included in the target groups will not be vaccinated, regardless of their vaccination or infection history. People who request it after individualized assessment could be vaccinated outside of the vaccination campaign.
