Vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease: they have exceptional measures due to drought and fires

He National Agrifood Health and Quality Service (Senasa) ordered this Wednesday exceptional measures for the foot-and-mouth vaccination campaigns that began this month.

“Exceptional measures are established for the foot-and-mouth vaccination campaigns of the year 2023, due to the occurrence of environmental phenomena such as intense droughts and/or forest fires”, stressed the agency in the respective resolution published in the Official Gazette.

The main novelty is that the Senasa facilitates the movement of animals, even if they have not fully complied with the inoculation requirements imposed by the regulations in force to be able to be mobilized within the zones of the country free of foot-and-mouth disease with vaccination.

Specifically, according to resolution 725 of 2005, All bovines or buffaloes that move in Argentina must be vaccinated against foot-and-mouth disease at least twicewithin a period of no more than 180 days from the last vaccination and no less than 21 days between them.

EXCEPTIONAL MEASURES

Within this framework, what Senasa decided is that the movements of priming vaccinated calves and heiferswill be able to mobilize during the foot-and-mouth vaccination campaigns in 2023, even when they have a single dose of vaccination.

Similarly, it provided that, during the first 15 days of the campaign, movements of bovines and buffaloes are exempted from compliance with vaccination from agricultural establishments that “have not yet completed the aforementioned vaccination, as long as the destination of these animals are establishments that, at the time of their reception, have not done so either.”

A clarification for these last cases is that, when the systematic vaccination of the first or second campaign of the current year is carried out in the establishment of destination, all the animals in it must be vaccinatedaccording to the corresponding category to be vaccinated according to the current campaign.

“The occurrence of environmental phenomena, such as intense droughts or forest fires, in various areas or provinces of Argentina generate a high impact on the livestock sector. Attentive to the aforementioned environmental eventualities, It is considered pertinent to adapt the measures in terms of health preventionin relation to certain movements of production animals”, argued Senasa.

And he reaffirmed that “that the measures provided for in this resolution They do not generate harm or impact on the maintenance of the optimal sanitary condition of the country with respect to Foot-and-Mouth Disease”.
