Tanalís Padilla, professor-researcher of history at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), recently highlighted that Cuba appears together with powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom and China in the list of countries that have developed their own vaccine against covid19 .

A message shared this Monday on the social network Twitter by the account of the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), referred to the words of the researcher in the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, where she also underlined that Cuba stands out for its high level of vaccination against the disease caused by Sars-Cov-2, second only to the United Arab Emirates.

“The MIT researcher points this out #Cuba appears alongside major powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom and China, in the list of countries that have developed their own vaccine; and which stands out for its high level of vaccination, surpassed only by the United Arab Emirates”.

Padilla’s text, titled Cuban vaccines and global inequality, He also acknowledges that the island was the first country to mass vaccinate children up to two years of age and also underlines the great effectiveness of Cuban vaccines.

On the other hand, the author comments that the design features of Cuban vaccines make them more feasible to vaccinate the world’s population, especially in poor countries.

In her analysis, the researcher argues that global inequality has allowed rich countries to acquire and administer surplus vaccines for their populations, while poor countries have been forced to wait.

Furthermore, big pharmaceutical companies, in their lust for profit, have blocked attempts to release the formulas of their anti-covid19 vaccines so that they could be mass-produced, Padilla denounces.

The US blockade against Cuba was decisive in making the decision to produce its own vaccines on the Caribbean island, he adds, denouncing that the empire has refused to ease, even minimally, “its inhumane sanctions at a time of emergency unprecedented health care”.

Under adverse conditions, Cuba continues to surprise the world, Padilla says. “Your vaccines against Covid-19 are another reminder of what can be achieved, if you do not operate according to the capitalist logic,” she concludes.
