Vaccination against Covid-19 and risk of MIS-C

The multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare and severe inflammatory response which occurs a few weeks after infection by SARS-CoV-2. Scientific evidence has shown that the vaccines against covid-19 reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and the serious complications that arise from it, but there are limited data on the safety of inoculating sera after multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children.

In order to expand the available evidence, we focus on the results of a study published by JAMA Network. Of the 385 vaccine-eligible patients enrolled in the study, 185 (48.1%) received at least one dose of the vaccine and 73.5% were male with a mean age of 12.2 years.

The mean time from diagnosis of MIS-C to inoculation of the first dose of the vaccine was nine months. The data indicate that 31 patients (16.8%) received one dose, 142 (76.8%) received two doses, and 12 (6.5%) received three doses.

In 32 patients (17.3%), adverse reactions were treated with medication: paracetamol in 11.4% of cases and ibuprofen at 5.9%. The study highlights that no patients with serious adverse events were recordedas the myocarditis or a recurrence of multisystem inflammatory syndrome. None of the participants required testing or hospitalization
