A vacancy for bird watchers has become available on the island of Gough in the Atlantic Ocean. The work is not for everyone: Gough is known as one of the most remote islands in the world.
The boat trip from South Africa to the island takes at least a week, writes BBC News. There is no other form of transport, because Gough has no airport.
The island is one of the most important breeding grounds for wild birds. Every year, about eight million birds descend on Gough. They are currently being monitored by seven RSBP bird protectors.
The British organization is looking for a eighth employee who wants to study bird species for at least fifteen months. The candidate must be able to adapt effortlessly to the quiet life on the island and the extreme climate. In addition, applicants must have experience studying wild birds.
Finally, one other remarkable job awaits those interested: exterminating the local mouse population. The rodents are a threat to the birds on the island and have evolved to be one and a half times the size of a typical house mouse.
The mice have learned to eat the birds’ eggs and chicks. That kills millions of birds every year. RSBP has been trying to eradicate the mice for years.
The work generates an annual salary of up to about 27,000 British pounds (about 30,500 euros). Internet is available on site to keep in touch with family and friends.
