VAB: “Half of Flemings postpone car purchase”

Half of the Flemish people postpone the purchase of a car. The main reason is because they do not know whether to opt for an electric car, a hybrid or one with a combustion engine. This is apparent from the Mobility Barometer of mobility organization VAB, an online survey of 2,000 Flemish people.

Of the respondents who postpone the purchase, 47 percent say they do so because they have doubts about the drive form of the car. Other reasons are that they use their car less due to the corona crisis (30 percent) or that they have to wait too long for a new car (6 percent).

It is striking that especially among young people the long waiting times play a role. Young people also doubt a little less about which drive form they should choose.

Furthermore, 27 percent of the respondents indicate that they will buy a used car in the near future. Young people in particular opt for a second-hand car: 42 percent of 18-24 year-olds and 38 percent of 25-34 year-olds. In addition, 35 percent of the respondents opt for a new car and 8 percent for a company car. About a quarter of those surveyed do not yet know what they will choose.

If you buy a used car, you more often opt for a classic drive type. This is because people are uncertain about the supply in the future and therefore make a ‘safe choice’, explains VAB. When choosing a new car, people often opt for 100 percent electric or (plug-in) hybrid.
