According to EastFruit analysts, the early cabbage produced in Uzbekistan appeared this week on the shelves of supermarkets in the capital of Latvia, Riga. The retail price of this product is €1.99 per kilo.

According to Marite Gailite, an expert at the Association of Vegetable Growers Latvijas Dārznieks, before the Uzbek cabbage, local supermarkets mostly sold early cabbage from Greece at a price of 1.29 euros per kg, and in December 2023 the price was even lower – 0. 89 euros per kg. Accordingly, cabbage from Uzbekistan is more expensive than Greek.

It should be noted that early or young cabbage is a different product from old and is mainly used for salads. Local cabbage of late varieties, harvested in 2023, is also present on the market and its price is significantly lower – ranging from 0.75 to 0.79 EUR/kg.

According to EastFruit, Uzbekistan annually earns 200-250 million US dollars from exporting fresh, frozen and dried vegetables. Cabbage provides up to 10% of these revenues, being the third most important export item after greenhouse tomatoes, with which there have been serious problems recently, and onions.

At the same time, Latvia is the main market for Uzbek cabbage among EU countries, although export volumes have remained relatively small until recently due to expensive logistics. In addition, recently there has been a tendency to supply trial batches of early cabbage from Uzbekistan to the Polish market.
