Uzbekistan is committed to stopping Afghans fleeing across the border

Uzbekistan said on Tuesday, August 17, that it would not allow illegal border crossings from Afghanistan, where Taliban militants have almost de facto taken power.

Any attempt to cross the border illegally will be thwarted under Uzbek law, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

Uzbekistan maintains close contacts with the Taliban on border control and the border situation.

Over the weekend, 22 air force planes and 24 helicopters with 585 Afghan soldiers arrived in Uzbekistan.

A total of 84 Afghan soldiers have fled to Uzbekistan, crossing the physical border in nature.

Another 158 civilians crossed the border illegally, the prosecutor’s office said. One Afghan air plane crashed.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Uzbekistan wants to maintain its traditionally friendly relations with Afghanistan.

It does not want to interfere in the internal affairs of the neighboring country and hopes that the change of power will be peaceful on the basis of “generally accepted norms of international law”, the ministry said.

With the US and other foreign military contingents being withdrawn from Afghanistan, the Taliban reportedly launched a general offensive operation this month, seizing virtually the entire territory of the country in a short time, but also killing Kabul on Sunday.-

Afghanistan’s current president, Ashraf Gani, left the country on Sunday.

Fearing for their lives, thousands of other Afghans who have cooperated with the current regime and the international military contingent are also trying to leave the country.
