Uzbekistan advanced to the round of 16 2023 Asian Cup after offset Australia 1-1. Syria kept their hopes of qualifying alive with a 1-0 win over India.
Australia vs Uzbekistan match at Al Janoub Stadium on Tuesday (23/1/2024) evening WIB. Martin Boyle opened the scoring for the Socceroos at the end of the first half. Hamrobekhov’s handball forced the referee to point to the spot.
Boyle stepped forward as executor and then kicked with his right foot. Goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov fell in the wrong direction, and the ball lodged in the bottom corner of the Uzbekistan goal. Australia led 1-0 in injury time.
Uzbekistan was finally able to score a goal in the 79th minute. Azizbek Turgunbhayev scored to equalize the score at 1-1.
From a corner kick, Turgunbhayev jumped the highest to meet the ball with a header. Matthew Ryan was helpless to stop the torrential flow of balls.
With this result, Australia and Uzbekistan qualified for the knockout phase in the top two positions of Group B. Australia won the group with seven points, ahead of runner-up Uzbekistan who collected five points.
Syria narrowly wins over India
At the same time, Syria maintained its hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup. Syria beat India with a score of 1-0 thanks to Omar Khribin’s only goal in the 76th minute.
These additional three points boosted Syria’s position to the top of the top three standings. Syria collected four points, one point ahead of Bahrain (2) and Indonesia (3). As is known, the four teams that finish at the top there have the right to progress to the next round while the two bottom teams are automatically eliminated.
For India, this defeat created a bad score. Not only were they eliminated, India also failed to score a single point and didn’t score any goals at all.
