Due to the increase in the number of corona infections, all hospitals in our country will have to reserve half of their beds on intensive care for covid patients by next Monday. That is already not enough for some hospitals. At UZ Brussel, normal care is again postponed and only necessary and urgent surgical procedures are still being performed.
The hospital is also setting up a ‘medium care’ department again. This nursing unit is used for patients who are doing better after a stay at the intensive care unit, but cannot yet go to a nursing unit for non-critical care because they still need non-invasive ventilation. Conversely, a covid-19 patient who is deteriorating on a regular nursing unit but is not yet in a critical condition can first be cared for and closely monitored in this medium care unit.
Meanwhile, 66 corona patients are being cared for at UZ Brussel. In the past 24 hours, 13 new patients were admitted and 8 patients were able to leave the hospital, 13 patients are treated in the intensive care unit.
In the Brussels Iris Hospitals, 31 percent of the beds on the intensive care services were occupied by covid-19 patients on Monday. Due to the further increase and a new count, that number is already at 43 percent of the total today, two days later. In phase 1b, which starts on Monday for all hospitals, half of the beds in intensive care will be reserved for corona patients.
In the three hospitals of the Chirec group, there was a slight increase of 2 additional corona cases in the past 24 hours. A total of 94 covid-19 patients are now being cared for, 15 of which are in the intensive care unit.
Hospital network in Namur and Luxembourg is moving to phase 2a
The hospital network Vivalia, which has hospitals in 47 municipalities in the provinces of Luxembourg and Namur, decided on Tuesday to move to phase 2a, of the covid emergency plan for hospitals. In concrete terms, this means that 60 percent of all hospital beds in intensive care are reserved for patients with covid-19. Above that, a capacity of 15 percent would also be added. This decision comes four days after the decision to move to phase 1b, where 50 percent of the beds were already reserved.
If the situation doesn’t improve, the network will be able to increase this capacity by 25 percent within 7 days, bringing them to Phase 2B.
