Ascent against the United States on many subjects, China displays “its firm determination” to defend its interests, before an important meeting in Alaska. The first significant face-to-face meeting between the two leading economic powers since the assumption of office of US President Joe Biden. The talks will be held from this Thursday in the city of Anchorage. Beijing has already warned Washington that any pressure would be “unnecessary”. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will discuss with senior Chinese official Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The meeting takes place in a context of strong bilateral tensions between Beijing and Washington on several subjects: Hong Kong, human rights, technological rivalry and espionage, treatment of the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang and trade. Beijing assured Thursday that “all subjects will be put on the table” but warned of its determination to defend its interests. “China will not compromise on matters concerning its sovereignty, security and interests,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.
