UWV is too busy with corona crisis to check job application obligation NOW

The UWV is so busy with extra work due to the corona crisis that it is no longer up to some other tasks. Supervision of the obligations of people entitled to benefits is partly lost, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW) reports Monday.

The UWV has recently given “the highest priority” to the timely payment of and decisions about unemployment benefits. The number of applications grew sharply due to the crisis and then there were the emergency measures NOW and TOFA.

An example of policy where control and enforcement is now less strong is the obligation to apply or appear. If jobseekers do not comply with this, this will temporarily have no consequences for the benefit. The measure applies in any case until 1 September.

According to the ministry, the UWV has worked overtime in recent months, but capacity is limited. New employees are therefore recruited and trained at the benefits agency.

Minister Wouter Koolmees (Social Affairs and Employment) has the biannual State of implementation of social security Sent to the House of Representatives on Monday.
