UvA General Practice: Healthcare for Students and the Risks of STDs

General practice UvA

Students from the HvA and the UvA may become patients at Huisartsenpraktijk UvA, regardless of where they live. This does not apply to other practices, you usually have to live in the postal code area of a general practice. This is not necessary at this practice, because the general practitioners have an arrangement with the UvA and the HvA. They are also closely connected to the UvA, they conduct research and the practice offers internships. The practice has a lot of experience with students and has been around for more than eighty years.

There is the idea among students that an STD can easily be solved with a pill, notes the GP, who works at the UvA General Practice (see box) and treats many AUAS students there. “I have the feeling that today’s young people experience life as manageable, as if they can influence everything, for example by taking a pill,” according to Van der Blom, who sees that students are increasingly having unsafe sex. ‘In addition, they don’t mind having an STD. HIV is no longer a fatal disease, it is natural and easy to treat.’

Resistance

But what students do not realize and what Van der Blom wants to warn about is that there is also resistance among STDs. “We are seeing an emergence of chlamydia in a resistant form, which initially mainly occurred in men, but which is now spreading,” says the GP. ‘This can ensure that the antibiotics no longer work and that you can become seriously ill from an STD. In addition, chlamydia, for example, can cause fertility problems, especially in women. Students don’t seem to think about that.’
