Zero Hour Writing

The University Clinic of Reproductive and Sexual Health (CUSRS) of the Veracruzana University (UV) will carry out the “First day of cervical cancer detection 2022”, it will be free of charge and includes the taking of a Pap smear and follow-up in a gynecological consultation reported Cirenia Hernández Trejo, coordinator of the Auxiliary Diagnostic Services.

Those interested in the study, which will take place from March 7 to 11, should schedule their appointment by calling 2288-421700 and 2288-422700 extension 10358, or going to the clinic located on Córdoba street corner Ernesto Ortiz Medina , Veracruz subdivision, in the city of Xalapa.

Hernández Trejo specified that due to health restrictions, only 10 patients per shift (morning and evening) will be attended to during the five days of the day, for which he recommended requesting the appointment in advance.

He said that there will be four days of this type that will be held during the year, in addition to those already scheduled for health support, such as detection of lipid problems, diabetes, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), breast cancer , and vasectomy days.

Second leading cause of cancer death in women

María del Carmen Herrera Hernández, an anatomical pathology specialist in charge of the Pathology Area of the CUSRS, pointed out that cervical cancer (cervix) is the leading cause of death from cancer in women in developing countries, and the second in developed countries, after lung cancer.

In Mexico it ranks second, only after breast cancer. According to this scenario, it is estimated that a woman dies every minute in the world from this preventable condition.

Due to the above and because the CUSRS has among its functions to attend to reproductive and sexual health, the area of pathology is fundamental for this type of studies that allow to determine in a timely manner if the patient has a normal cervix, or if she presents any premalignant lesion. or malignant. After the analysis, the report is made and sent to the doctor for review and evaluation; if the result is positive, the patient is referred to a health institution for regular control and evaluation.

Of the risk factors for cervical cancer, the pathology specialist mentioned sexually transmitted infections; human papilloma virus (HPV), which has three fundamental determinations associated with this cancer (16, 18 and 31); beginning of an active sexual life at an early age (less than 18 years); multiple sexual partners; weakened immune system; low socioeconomic status; more than three pregnancies; first pregnancy before the age of 20.

Finally, he stressed that these studies have an approximate cost of two thousand pesos, but the University Clinic will carry them out completely free of charge, with friendly and prompt attention.
