Utrecht wants to organize Vuelta start in 2022 that went missing due to corona | NOW

The municipality of Utrecht wants to organize the start of the Vuelta a España next year. The Spanish stage race was supposed to start in Utrecht last year, but that was canceled due to the corona pandemic.

On Thursday, the city council of Utrecht again expressed the ambition to house the start of the Vuelta in 2022. The council members voted by a majority for a contribution of 250,000 euros to the Utrecht bid.

Responsible alderman Klaas Verschuure was pleased with the council’s decision. “Today Utrecht has set course in the right direction. We look forward to receiving the Vuelta in 2022, around the 900th anniversary of our city, and making it a wonderful city festival.”

It is not yet clear whether the city will actually get the start. The Spanish organization of the Vuelta is currently investigating the possibilities of starting the cycling race in the Netherlands.

Last year there would be three stages on Dutch territory: a team time trial with start and finish at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, a stage from Den Bosch to Utrecht and a stage with start and finish in Breda. Due to the corona pandemic, the Vuelta remained on Spanish territory. The lap was also shortened from 21 to 18 stages.
