The owner of the business disagrees RTV Utrecht that she feels unsafe and has been abandoned by the municipality and the police.
Restaurant busy
At the beginning of this month, the restaurant in the center of Utrecht was occupied by a group of activists on a Friday evening. They then refused to leave until the foie gras disappeared from the menu.
Six activists were arrested that evening for refusing to leave the restaurant. Two of them had chained themselves and had to be cut loose by the police.
A guest of the restaurant suffered a leg injury during the action. He slipped on leaflets handed out by activists and then had to go to the hospital.
‘Son lives above restaurant’
Last weekend there were protests again and then, according to the owner, the measure was full. “I decide what’s on the menu myself, but I feel abandoned by the municipality and the police,” she says to local broadcaster. “My son lives above the restaurant and I have to arrange security myself.”
She says the demonstrations are dear to her heart. “I haven’t been able to work for a while because of all the emotions.”
Foie gras
Foie gras is the fatty liver of ducks or geese. The animals are fed through a funnel or tube fattened up in a short timea practice that is banned in the Netherlands.
