Step- The UTEP Miners once again looked inconsistent on offense, they were down by up to 16 points in the first half and although they could come back in the second half, in the end they lost to the UTSA Road Runners this Thursday night, 86 -79, at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.
It was the second loss in a row for the El Pasoans, who thus fall below .500 in overall victory average with seven games won and eight lost, while in Conference USA games they have a 3-6 mark. For their part, the Road Runners improved to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the league.
In the first minutes of the game UTEP took the lead 10-8, but the home team scored eight unanswered points to go up 16-10 with 12:46 left in the first period. A two-point shot from Keaton Wallace gave UTSA a comfortable 31-15 lead with 7:08 in the first half.
At halftime, the El Pasoans trailed 46-38, but in the first two minutes of the second period they scored seven unanswered points to get one behind the tie, 46-45. With 16:04 left, two effective free throws by Bryson Williams allowed the Miners to rally and put the score in their favor 49-48.
The game entered a give-and-take stage and UTEP was back up 53-51 with 14:16 on the clock thanks to a Williams basket. It was the last time that the Flintstones quintet was up on the scoreboard, as it was once prey to the inconsistency and stopped scoring, while the Road Runners did the opposite and with 6:35 to play UTSA already won 72-58.
The best scorers for UTEP were Souley Boum and Bryson Williams with 24 points each, while for UTSA Jhivvan Jackson was dispatched with the big spoon by scoring 32 points, with four 3s in ten attempts. In total, the San Antonio squad made 10 shots from long range.
This Saturday UTEP and UTSA will meet once again, but at the Don Haskins Center starting at 7:00 pm.
