A few tears were shed by the UTC Fischer Ried players on Sunday afternoon. The reason for this was the wafer-thin 3:4 defeat against the Linz AG Team Upper Austria in the final game of the Tennis Bundesliga.
With a hard-fought 4-1 semi-final win against Weigelsdorf, the Rieders moved into the final. There was a new edition of the 2021 final. After the individual, the Innviertler women led with victories from Sinja Kraus (who drove directly from an international tournament in Vienna to the final in Mauthausen), Arabella Koller and Livia Kraus, whose opponent gave the same.
A win in the final two double games would have been enough for UTC Ried. Nadja Ramskogler and Livia Kraus had to admit defeat to the pairing Petra Krejsova/Tamara Kostic with 5:7 and 5:7. Anna Klasen and Arabella Koller (Ried) had a match point against Nika Radisic and Melanie Klaffner in the decisive Champions tie-break that they could not use. Ultimately, the two Linz women prevailed with 3:6, 6:3 and 12:10.

“The girls were obviously hugely disappointed, the title was within reach. A few tears have already been shed,” says Florian Reiter, sporting director of UTC Ried, in an interview with OÖN.
Despite the narrow defeat, he was not disappointed. On the contrary: “For us, like in 2021, it was an outstanding season considering our possibilities compared to the Linz team. I’m really very proud of the girls. Of course, winning the title at some point remains our goal,” says Reiter.
A large part of the young team is to be retained for the 2024 season. Number one, Sinja Kraus, currently the second-best Austrian in the WTA rankings, will probably only be used sporadically. The WTA career logically takes priority.
