How do you renovate a busy traffic junction in such a way that the flow of traffic is impaired as little as possible? Mark Castens, who heads the road renewal department in the west of Bremen at the Office for Roads and Transport (ASV), has dealt with this question over the past few weeks and months. Because, according to Castens: “Last year we noticed that the condition of the road on the Utbremen distribution circuit was deteriorating more and more and very quickly.”
During the summer holidays – when there is usually less traffic – the road surface should therefore be renewed on the entire roundabout. For this purpose, one half of the distribution circuit will be closed in July and August and traffic between Osterfeuerberger Ring and Utbremer Ring will then be single-lane in both directions through the other half, so that the Findorff-Walle axis will be maintained.

The south-western half of the roundabout is closed from July 23rd to August 6th, and the northeastern half of the roundabout from August 7th to 21st. “The road users are then asked to concentrate,” says Castens, because while a total of 5,000 square meters of asphalt is being renewed during this time and damage to the canal is being repaired at the same time, the motorists in the roundabout exceptionally have vehicles in the second lane opposite.
So that buses and trucks can also use the route and have enough space to change lanes, the lane will initially be slightly widened on Utbremer Ring near Salzburger Straße from July 16 to 22. This temporary solution will be removed again between August 23 and 30 and the pedestrian crossing will be restored at this point and also made barrier-free.
Various diversion recommendations will be signposted during the construction work. The fly-over is not affected by the work and pedestrians and cyclists can easily pass the Utbrem roundabout during the entire construction period. A lot of work and tinkering was necessary for the roundabout refurbishment: After the refurbishment was decided in December, Castens first determined the exact areas and commissioned the legally required material analysis in order to get more information about the materials installed on the roundabout and any pollutants.

Then the necessary work had to be precisely defined and the associated costs estimated and registered so that the corresponding funds could be taken into account in the budget. “We now have a prospect of the funds,” says Castens, for whom it went into the next round: In the course of the sponsoring participation, he met with around 80 representatives from various institutions such as the police, fire brigade, chamber of commerce, Landesverband Verkehrsgewerbe Bremen (LVB), the advisory boards in Walle and Findorff and many others in order to take their concerns into account in the planning.
The head of unit also coordinated with his colleagues and looked around on site. It has been shown that work on the Utbremer Kreisel and the Osterfeuerberger Ring can be merged, according to Castens: “This will shorten the construction time for the construction project in the Osterfeuerberger Ring.”
