Úsvit: A Powerful Film about Ambition, Mystery, and Change in 1930s Slovakia

König, who has not yet been seen in front of the camera, took on the role of a factory director who, in the 1930s, heads to the Slovak town of Svit with his pregnant wife to build a new city of the future, Baťa, modeled after Zlín.

However, the discovery of a dead hermaphrodite newborn changes his ambitious plans, the situation is also complicated by his wife Helena, who decides to solve the mystery.

“For me, it’s a terribly powerful theme about the complexity of life, where one has clearly aligned black-and-white ideas and concepts for the future and doesn’t really expect how easily things can change. It forced me to think more in my personal life as well,” König told Novinkám.

He perceives the theme of hermaphroditism, or rather intersexuality, in the film as a metaphor for something that brings to life a new view of the world, where everything is not black and white.

“It brings something to life that can complicate, but actually open a person’s eyes, that there is also something else going on that he himself may not have explored and that he could deal with,” the actor described, saying that, like other representatives of the film, he is glad the movie helps communicate this topic.

O Crystal Globe

König is better known as a theater actor, he is a long-time member of the Divadla Na zábradlí troupe. Dawn is thus his first major role in a feature film. “It was a great acting opportunity and it was an important experience to meet the camera, because I’m used to working more in the theater,” he said.

In the film, he also plays alongside the more experienced Eliška Křenková, who supported him during the filming. “Eliška is an excellent actress and an excellent acting partner. She is also quite experienced against me, which was just nice to be able to rely on such an experienced partner,” mentioned König.

Actor Miloslav König came to Karlovy Vary with the film Úsvit

He himself is also enthusiastic about the period setting of the film, which helped him to influence the role: “But one has to be careful, so that it doesn’t just slip into some form, so that it’s not a walking character. The director of the film, Matěj Chlupáček, and I paid attention to the language and acting so that it was contemporary, and not that we were going to create some stylization of the 1930s in acting.”

The film Úsvit, written by Slovak screenwriter Miro Šifra, competed in the main section of this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film also had its world premiere in Karlovy Vary. The film will be in theaters on October 5.

“I think the audience should come just because it’s a strong story built on a great script. It’s also beautifully shot, so it’s definitely worth seeing,” König invited the audience to the film.
