In an interview with Sport Bild, USMNT coach Greg Berhalter spoke about some of his country’s young prospects who are playing in Europe. 17-year-old center-back Justin Che, who just spent half a season on loan at Bayern Munich from FC Dallas, was among those who caught the coach’s attention.
“Justin has incredible potential and has made such an impression on Säbener Strasse that the Munich team want to keep him,” Berhalter said. “Bayern are a great club and it’s a great sign when those in charge believe in this young player and plan the future with him. It’s a great honor for Justin and a strong symbol for us as the American team. “
Che has apparently impressed enough that Bayern continue with a permanent transfer and ongoing negotiations with FC Dallas. That would make him the second American defender to move from Dallas to Munich, after Chris Richards a few years ago. Richards’ development has been nothing short of stellar, and he even managed to consolidate himself into forming a true Bundesliga squad when he was on loan at Hoffenheim this season.
If Che follows in his footsteps, he could set himself up for a similar success. Berhalter acknowledges this, saying: “If Justin continues to play at Bayern, it will help him develop and improve the quality of our national team.” Che has already been called up to USMNT for their next training camp, signaling that they have a lot of confidence in the youngster. From Bayern’s perspective, we wish them the best – the club could always use more talented youngsters in their academy.
