According to Jeremy Munday, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, if a material similar to the paint of the Purdue University researchers covered 1-2% of the Earth’s surface, the amount of light reflected back into space could reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the planet enough to stabilize global temperatures. .
Munday told The New York Times that the amount of light reflected back into space wouldn’t do much damage to the cosmos. “It would be like pouring a glass of water into the ocean,” Munday said.

Earth’s total surface area is about 510 million square kilometers (and most of it is water). Therefore, in Munday’s proposal, the paint should cover an area of 5 to 10 million square kilometers.
For example, the total area of the United States is about 9.8 million square kilometers.
So, in Munday’s proposal, a country the size of the USA should be covered with white paint.
This also means that we would need roughly 139 billion gallons of white paint to cover just 1% of the Earth’s surface.
That means a lot of paint.
Of course, this number doubles when we need to cover 2% of the surface.
Nor does it take into account how difficult it would be to paint the oceans, deserts and trees.
