Using White Paint to Stabilize Global Temperatures: An Innovative Solution for Global Warming

Global warming is one of our biggest problems, and researchers around the world are looking for a solution. An interesting solution proposal came from Jeremy Munday, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California.

According to the news of Science Alert, in 2021, researchers at Purdue University announced that they had developed the whitest paint in the world. The paint is so white that it can reflect more than 98% of the light. This is very useful because light also produces heat.

Researchers suggest that if the paint is used in a building, it will reduce the temperature on the surface, lowering the temperature inside and reducing the need for air conditioning.

But what if there was a larger application, such as lowering the temperature of the entire planet?

According to Jeremy Munday, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, if a material similar to the paint of the Purdue University researchers covered 1-2% of the Earth’s surface, the amount of light reflected back into space could reduce the amount of heat absorbed by the planet enough to stabilize global temperatures. .

Munday told The New York Times that the amount of light reflected back into space wouldn’t do much damage to the cosmos. “It would be like pouring a glass of water into the ocean,” Munday said.

HOW MUCH IS 1-2% OF THE EARTH’S SURFACE?

Earth’s total surface area is about 510 million square kilometers (and most of it is water). Therefore, in Munday’s proposal, the paint should cover an area of 5 to 10 million square kilometers.

For example, the total area of the United States is about 9.8 million square kilometers.

So, in Munday’s proposal, a country the size of the USA should be covered with white paint.

This also means that we would need roughly 139 billion gallons of white paint to cover just 1% of the Earth’s surface.

That means a lot of paint.

Of course, this number doubles when we need to cover 2% of the surface.

Nor does it take into account how difficult it would be to paint the oceans, deserts and trees.
