Using Telegram on Apple Watch

Telegram is the most popular messenger in Germany after Whatsapp, Facebook and iMessage, at least according to StatistaSimilar to Whatsapp and Facebook, the app lacks a connection to the Apple Watch. However, the messenger can also be used on the Watch via the notifications interface.

Enable notifications for Telegram

Since Telegram does not have a native watch app, you can use the notification center of the watch. The trick here is that the watch mirrors the notifications from the iPhone and offers rudimentary tools to process these notifications and reply to messages. To ensure that your Telegram messages are on the Apple Watch arrive, go to the Watch app on your iPhone or the Settings app on your watch.

There, tap on “Notifications” and make sure that notifications in general are activated and that Telegram notifications are mirrored from the iPhone. To do this, scroll down to the “Mirror iPhone notifications from:” section in the window and make sure that the switch for Telegram is set to green.

Reply to a message in Telegram

If you receive a message from your contacts via Telegram, you can also reply to it on the watch. Tap on a message and scroll to the “Reply” option in the preview. Here, watchOS keeps a list of prepared replies such as “OK”, “On the way” etc.

If none of them fit, scroll down to an empty text field. Here you have the option to type in your message (from Apple Watch Series 7). It’s even easier if you tap the microphone symbol and dictate your message. The dictation function on the watch is quite accurate, you just have to make sure to dictate punctuation marks in the right places. The person you’re talking to won’t even notice that you sent the answer from the tiny watch.

Will the Telegram app ever come to the Apple Watch?

No, not in the foreseeable future. The first and probably last mention of the Apple Watch on the Telegram blog in June 2015shortly after Apple launched its smartwatch. Pavel Durov, the head of the messenger, is currently running a political campaign against Apple. Above all, the long review times for app updates and the 30 percent tax on digital sales are a thorn in his side.
