Using Artificial Intelligence to Detect Fraud at New York Subway Stations

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) used artificial intelligence to detect fraud at several subway stations.

What we know

According to an MTA report, in May, artificial intelligence was used at seven city stations to detect fraud. Officials use this data to compare it to the fares paid.

More than 50% of fraud cases involve people going through the emergency exit. 20% of passengers jump over the turnstile, 16% slip through the gaps and 12% go under the turnstile.

The report indicates that the largest peak in fraud occurs between 3 and 4 p.m., and the lowest peak occurs during the morning rush hour.

The agency estimates losses from fare evasion amounted to $690 million last year.

This year, CCTV technology will be “extended to approximately two dozen additional stations”.
