And with Taylor Swift in attendance to support her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, would there be a genre crossover with the country-pop princess? However, the guest that had everyone hopeful was Usher’s protégé, Justin Bieber. Rumors circulated that the two were in talks for a special tag-team moment during the halftime show.
Unfortunately, the much-anticipated reunion with Justin Bieber did not materialize. Instead, Usher delivered a night of glorious R&B, with special appearances from H.E.R. for “Bad Girl” and Alicia Keys for “My Boo.” Lil Jon and Ludacris joined him on stage for “Yeah!”, and Jermaine Dupri, Usher’s mentor and legendary R&B and hip-hop producer, had his moment in the spotlight. Black Eyed Pea’s will.i.am also made an appearance for “OMG.”

The performance began with a circus-themed spectacle, complete with a dancer on stilts. But it quickly transitioned into a representation of Black collegiate life, with dancers performing movements inspired by strolling, a popular shoulder-shimmying dance associated with Black fraternities like Kappa Alpha Psi. Marching bands spelled out Usher’s name on the field, reminiscent of the extravagant performances seen at homecoming events in Atlanta, known for their celebration of Black Greek culture. The reference to Drumline, a 2002 movie about Atlantan university culture, added to the authenticity of the performance.
Usher continued to pay tribute to his hometown with references to Atlanta’s strip-club scene. Pole dancers appeared in the background, highlighting the city’s historic connection to this form of entertainment. He also showcased Atlantan culture by rollerblading alongside background dancers on skates, reminiscent of the local roller skating rink scene captured in the movie ATL.
The performance concluded with a perfect rendition of “Yeah!” featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris. Usher took the audience on a journey through different realms, from the circus to the club and even a futuristic Tron-like world. His sparkly, blue-and-black outfit resembled a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and showcased his abs. As he chanted “the world to the A” on stage, Usher paid homage to his musical and geographic roots, creating a sentimental and boppin’ experience for all.
