This will not surprise anyone: During the Corona crisis, Germans traveled significantly less abroad and as a result, less roaming data volume was used. However, due to the pandemic, travel within the EU has decreased dramatically. This can also be seen in the calls made from abroad in 2020: Here there was a decrease of around a quarter – to 2.9 billion connection minutes. The number of SMS sent has even been reduced by about half – to 110 million. However, this is a long-lasting trend, as most users are turning away from SMS and instead communicate on the go via messengers such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and Co.
