(Elbil24): – There is no doubt that electric cars are gaining more and more space in the used market, says government contact Thor Egil Braadland in Naf in a press release.
He points out that five years ago, only four percent of electric cars were among used cars. So far this year, the share is over 14 percent. This means that about every seventh car sold used is an electric car.
– The second-hand market for electric cars is growing every day, says Braadland.

However, he reminds that the electric second-hand market is still immature.
– More new electric cars are still sold every month than used electric cars are sold, says Braadland.
So far this year, around 17,000 new electric cars have been sold in Norway, compared to 13,000 used electric cars. Then it will be exciting to see how the delivery time for new electric cars will affect the used market.

Diesel dominates the used market
At the same time, both the number and share of petrol cars and diesel cars in the used market are still high, albeit declining. About three out of four cars sold used are now a petrol or diesel car, according to figures from the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV).

So far in 2022, 42,000 used diesel cars have been sold. In comparison, only 700 new diesel cars have been sold.
– Five years ago, 92 percent of all used cars were a regular petrol or diesel car. So far this year the share is below 75 percent. Hybrids and rechargeable hybrids make up the rest, says Braadland.
Range counts
A challenge with the used market for electric cars is that three to four year old electric cars do not necessarily have the range and size that buyers are looking for. The development of recent years means that newer electric cars have managed to combine size and long range in a much better way – and in this way meet the requirements set by many buyers.
Surveys Naf has done show that most people want electric cars with a range of around 500 kilometers or more.
– Several of the new electric cars have a range of around 500 kilometers, while a used electric car from 2018 typically has a range of around 300 kilometers in summer, and even shorter in winter. If you want a used electric car with a range of 400-500 kilometers, you must look for a car from 2019 or 2020. The exception is Tesla, says Braadland.

The best tips
There are several good, basic tips for you who are going to buy a used electric car. Should you buy from a retailer or privately? And how important is the car’s battery and charging history?
One of the most important things you should do is get a diagnosis of the battery to check the capacity of the battery, a kind of health check. If the car is heavily charged, the capacity may have been lost and you end up with a shorter range.

Drop fee to help sales
Naf believes there is one thing in particular that the authorities can do to strengthen the electric second-hand market.
– To help the used sale of electric cars, we believe the planned re-registration fee for used electric cars must be dropped. The re-registration fee for electric cars has still not been introduced, but it is on the trail as soon as the EU approves it, says Braadland – and continues:
– Ideally, this tax should have been removed for all cars. Having taxes on the sale of second-hand goods is very un-Norwegian, but you have that on cars, Braadland concludes.
