Intisari-Online.com – The end of 2020 is almost here, but a pandemic corona virus until now it is not known when it will end soon.
Even positive cases Covid-19 instead increased in recent times.
To prevent in order not to be exposed to this virus, we are always reminded to apply health protocols.
One of the health protocols that are always reminded is usage face mask.

Unfortunately, the community’s compliance with health protocols has only decreased.
In fact, until November 27, 2020 data from the Covid-19 Handling Task Force showed that the percentage of public compliance in wearing masks was only 59.32 percent.
Besides, many people still use it the wrong way.
One of them is the habit of lowering the mask to the chin or even to the neck.
For example, when eating and drinking.
Some people are also seen lowering their masks to their chin or neck, even though they are not eating or drinking, just for reasons of comfort.
In fact, there are health effects that we can experience if we often lower the mask to the chin or neck when doing activities outside.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) once warned through a video not to touch masks with our hands while wearing them.
In the video, the CDC also points to another rule that some people still have difficulty obeying, namely: “don’t put a face mask on your neck or forehead”.
According to infectious disease expert and senior researcher at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Amesh A. Adalja, MD, there are several reasons why this habit should be avoided.
According to him, masks must be used appropriately for effective protection.
The proper way to use it is to fit the face, but still allow us to breathe properly.
Covid-19 can be transmitted through respiratory droplets from the mouth or nose when someone sneezes, coughs, or simply talks.
Transmission is also possible from someone who is asymptomatic.
If the mask is not used properly, a person will be susceptible to inhaling the particles they get from outside, or if he is a person who is sick, then he is susceptible to transmitting it to other people.
“Wearing it inappropriately on and not covering the mouth and nose will not provide any benefit,” said Dr. Adalja.
In addition, as much as possible the mask must be kept sterile and free from environmental contaminants, including those that may be on our skin or hands.
Meanwhile, removing the mask and putting it back on can involve a lot of repetitive touching.
“To move it to the chin we of course have to touch it and it can dirty (the mask),” said Adalja.
Meanwhile, specialist in infectious diseases and professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, William Schaffner, MD added, when traveling, we may come into contact with surfaces contaminated with the virus.
So, touching a face mask with hands that cannot be sure to be clean can actually transmit the virus to the face area.
Apart from a higher possibility of exposure to the virus if the mask is not used properly, lowering the face mask to the chin or neck can also make us infected if there is a virus in our neck area.
The East Midlands Ambulance Service from the National Health Service (NHS) once reminded something similar through a graphic.
“This chart helps explain the importance of not wearing a mask on the chin or neck,” the chart reads.
Drops containing virus are not visible to the naked eye, so we will not know if there are particles containing the virus stuck around our chin and neck area.
If the chin and neck area is exposed to droplets containing the virus and we lower the mask to the area, it can make the mask contaminated.
This means that when the mask is reused to cover the nose and mouth, we will be vulnerable to bacteria, germs and viruses that stick to the chin and neck.
Take off the mask when eating and drinking
Instead of lowering the mask to the chin or neck when eating and drinking in public, take it off.
Before removing the mask, Adalja recommends washing your hands with soap and water first or using a hand sanitizer.
Then, remove the mask on the ear loop, making sure not to touch the part that covers the face.
If you wear a medical mask and will be out of the house for a long time, bring a plastic bag to dispose of the used mask when replacing it.
If you don’t have a plastic bag with you, keep the used mask in the bag or bag first and throw it away immediately when you find the trash.
When going to put the mask back on, wash your hands again first.
Make sure to wear it properly by covering the nose and mouth, and only touching the ear loop. Nabilla Tashandra
