USB Postpones Strike to Allow Workers to Claim Their Rights: Mobilization for the Right to Strike in Essential Public Services

“Four hours are not enough for workers to claim their rights, we will postpone the strike of 29 September 2023 by 24 hours to 9 October 2023 by 24 hours, to allow all road and tram drivers to be able to take to the streets and express their dissent” . This is the response from the USB to the decision of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, who signed the injunction reducing the strike from 24 to 4 hours for next Friday.

The one on 9 October “for all autoferrotranvieri transforms into a great mobilization commitment for the right to strike in essential public services. National Coordination USB Private Work sector Local Public Transport”. For the USB, “yet another attack on the exercise of the right to strike has taken place”.

The reasons for the postponed strike

The strike was proclaimed – and postponed – by the grassroots union. Among the reasons why the agitation was proclaimed are the “cancellation of increases in service and energy tariffs, the freezing and capping of the prices of primary goods and fuels, the blocking of military spending and the sending of weapons to Ukraine, the request for economic investments for all essential public services, the overcoming of penalizing entry salaries by guaranteeing the application of first and second level contracts to newly hired workers and, as explained by Usb, “the need to modify the obsessive and vicious criterion which, praising savings, sees a lot of public money being burned through contracts and subcontracts to companies that offer poor quality services and underpaid work, guaranteeing them handsome profits”.

Added to this are “the safety of workers and the service, the introduction of the crime of murder at work, the minimum wage law of 10 euros an hour against the practice of atypical contracts and precarious work, a free exercise of the right to strike in essential public services and a law on representation that overcomes the monopoly built on the complicity between trade unions and trade associations”.
