USB-C cables get new logos to avoid confusion

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), a non-profit organization responsible for defining protocols related to USB standard, presented this Thursday (30) new power certification logos for the cabos USB-C. The changes are intended to avoid confusion when purchasing the accessory.

According to the entity, the new logos allow the user to more easily identify the charging capabilities of certified USB-C cables, compatible with a wide range of electronics. A recent update allowed raise the support to 240W, but not all available accessories support this maximum power.

In addition to highlighting whether the cable supports 60W or 240W of charging power with a revamped design, the USB-IF has also updated the USB4 certification seals. From the change, it becomes easier to know what is the maximum data transfer speed of the product you are using (20 Gbps or 40 Gbps).

As it is possible to find a higher data slowness (20 Gbps transfer) and a higher loading speed (240W) in the same product, or vice versa, the group also created a logo to solve this doubt. In this case, the new classification indicates that the accessory supports the highest speeds in both categories.

Combating piracy

Avoiding the hassles of buying and using a Type-C USB cable is not the only purpose of the upgrade. According to the USB-IF, the new seals are also a way to encourage consumers to purchase exclusively original and certified products, which can reduce the chances of problems with the equipment.

As only accessories certified by the entity will display the redesigned logos, it believes this will encourage buyers to choose reliable sources, combating piracy. The new brands should start appearing on product packaging soon.
