The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Kansas State University (KSU), launched the third of six agricultural technology parks in Haiti at Campus Henry Christophe, Limonade (CHCL ). This park will allow the university to expand its active roles in agricultural education and research through the partnership with Haiti Agricultural University Partnership Activity (HAUP).
USAID partners with Kansas State University and Campus Henry Christophe de Limonade
to launch an agricultural technology park in the North.
Funded by USAID through the Feed the Future initiative, HAUP will strengthen the capacity of Haitian institutions to conduct research, improve education, and provide extension services to rural communities. The CHCL is a state university with a long tradition of agricultural activities in the Nord department. By improving its capacity, CHCL will be able to deliver more relevant training to the local workforce and expand the reach to local farmers to improve agricultural production.
Part of a network of six agricultural parks across Haiti, CHCL is a leader in climate-smart agriculture and will showcase related agricultural technologies and strategies. These innovations will help Haitian farmers grow their produce more efficiently and sustainably, increasing their incomes.
The CHCL park will also serve as a demonstration and training center for conducting applied research. Local farmers will learn how to increase agricultural productivity and improve their practices in this area. CHCL has already recruited undergraduate students who will carry out research in the agricultural park. In addition, the park will help the university generate additional revenue to ensure its operation.
“The effects of climate change on agricultural production are a concern for everyone, and they have significant impacts on Haitian agriculture,” said Vara Prasad, director of the Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab at KSU. “We are fortunate that USAID/Haiti has funded HAUP so that we can partner with Haitian universities to promote new production technologies. »
USAID/Haiti’s Office of Economic Growth and Agricultural Development Director Michelle Jennings said, “USAID is pleased to help this agricultural technology park engage youth and build resilience in the agricultural sector. . All of these interventions will be integrated into research and extension to increase productivity and know-how in farmers’ fields across Haiti. »
Dr. Herisse Guirand, President of CHCL, said, “We welcome the opportunity to work with other Haitian universities, KSU and USAID. The Agricultural Technology Park will enable farmers to better produce food in a changing climate. »
