The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Humanitarian Aid announced a contribution of $23 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to provide emergency relief, life-saving protection and reproductive health services to 1.3 million of the most vulnerable women and girls in Yemen.
The United Nations Population Fund said – in a statement – that the support of the US Agency will contribute to the provision of comprehensive and integrated services for reproductive health, protection, mental health and psychosocial support in 14 hospitals and four mobile clinics, and 20 safe spaces for women and girls will be supported to provide psychosocial care, and assistance in providing Immediate life-saving assistance to families newly fleeing conflict or natural disaster, through support to the Rapid Response Mechanism led by the United Nations Population Fund.
The statement quoted the representative of the United Nations Population Fund in Yemen, Inshirah Ahmed, as saying, “The needs of women and girls in Yemen are still great and urgent, and this generous contribution will enable the United Nations Population Fund and its partners to continue providing protection and health services to women and girls to save their lives amid one of the worst crises in the world.” .
The UN Fund stated that more than 5 million women and girls of childbearing age suffer from limited or no access to reproductive health services, including 1.5 million pregnant women who suffer from acute malnutrition, noting that they need about $40 million during the five months. And earlier today, the British Foreign Office announced, on Friday, a new humanitarian aid program worth $ 205 million to provide health care for women and children affected by the war in Yemen.
