USA with the worst record of the pandemic and the new European recommendations on the use of masks: covid-19, state of the world

What stands out this Wednesday are the numbers in the USA, such as the number of new deaths, 1,939, more than had ever been recorded in a single day in the country, and which has raised the total number to 12,700. The data were released by Johns Hopkins University. So far, about 396 thousand cases of infection have been confirmed, making the USA the country with the most cases.

The state of New York remains the most worrying: the number of deaths has reached a new peak, 779, with the total number of deaths being 6,268. Also in Brazil, a new daily record was reached with 133 deaths (800 in total) and 2,210 infected by the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours (around 16 thousand cases of infection in total)

In Spain, 757 deaths were registered in the last 24 hours and the number of confirmed cases already exceeds 146 thousand. In France, the total number of deaths is about ten thousand and, it was learned this Wednesday, the quarantine is expected to be extended beyond April 15.

However, the country that world leaders in data analysis predict will be most affected by the pandemic is the United Kingdom, with more than 40% of total deaths on the continent. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, a North American health research institute, anticipates 66,000 coronavirus-related deaths in the United Kingdom by August, with a peak of around 3,000 daily deaths.

The good news came from Italy, where the number of fatalities has slowed (542, 62 fewer than the previous day) and that of recovery cases has broken a record (another 2,099, bringing the total number to about 26,000).

European Center for Disease Prevention and Control recommends widespread use of masks

But today was not just about numbers. There were also new recommendations, specifically on the use of masks. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, a European Union body, has published a document recommending the use of masks even by people without symptoms.

“Wearing a mask in public can be a way to control the spread of infection in the community by minimizing the excretion of respiratory droplets from people who are asymptomatic infected or who have not yet had symptoms”, reads the report, according to which “ The use of masks in the community should be considered, especially in closed and busy spaces, such as supermarkets, shopping centers and public transport ”.

For next week, a meeting of European health ministers “to share experiences” was announced, as explained by Hans Kluge, WHO representative in Europe, cited by “El País”, calling for a strengthening of “protection actions for health professionals. Cheers”. “At this moment, we cannot relax in the measures, we have to double the efforts”, he stressed, adding that “any change in strategy must be considered”.
